The College of Europe

The College of Europe orginated in the Congress of Europe, when Salvador de Madariaga, a Spanish writer in exile. proposed the establishment of a postgraduate programme on European integration for students from different countries. A group of citizens from Bruges, a beautiful medieval city about fifty miles from Brussels, lobbied successfully for the college to be located there. During his long tenure as rector (Hendrik) Brugmans was an unrelenting proponent of european federalism, although most of the students at the College evinced a greater interest in conducting international love affairs and landing lucrative positions in the institution of the European Communities.
